Hey friends! Sorry I've been MIA on here this week! Promise it's not permanent, I just had a ton of stuff to catch up on this week. This was one of those weeks where seemingly everything was going wrong. Everything from me literally breaking things everywhere I go, to some really hard things happening in the lives of people close to us. I'm ready for a restful weekend and a fresh start next week. Anyone with me??

What are you guys up to this weekend? Dressing up I hope? I have no idea what I'm doing, just hoping to get some baking in there at some point.

I really really hope you had a good week. I'll see you here on Monday, not so MIA (let's hope) next week!!

Happy Friday friends. Enjoy it.Joanna Waterfallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10536161015876494852noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3492146538065873069.post-75801513817948051932012-10-24T09:30:00.003-07:002012-10-24T09:30:31.287-07:00Fashion Inspiration
When it comes to clothes, I'm not the biggest fashionista I'm more of a, "what can I throw on to be super comfy but still look decent" kind of girl. And being that I work from home, most days are spent in yoga pants and tank tops. But I really do appreciate fashion. I love the artistic side of it. I love how you can play with colors, and express yourself through what you're wearing.

Sometimes I find myself browsing the Street Peeper site when I'm wanting some different kind of inspiration. Today I came across this lovely lady from Milan. I'm not normally drawn to these colors, maybe it's the election coming up, but I really love how she put together this outfit The bold colors of her skirt paired with the subtle neutrals of her blouse. Tying it all together is that lovely black collar. I'm a fan.

It's always fun to play around with something different, especially when you're in an "inspiration rut" as I like to call it. Fashion is a great place to gather creative and color inspiration.

You can see the details of what this girl's wearing here, and more street fashion from all over the world here! Go get inspired!
Happy Wednesday friends!
She's an amazing designer I had the privilege of meeting at DesignLife in Palm Springs. Her soft spirit and kind heart really make her stand out as not only a lovely designer, but a lovely person. Here's Alyssa everyone!

Hello! I'm Alyssa, a graphic designer at Alyssa Yuhas Creative. I'm usually found designing branding, blogs, websites and magazines for small business and creative entrepreneurs. I absolutely love what I do (I even have a poster to prove it!). I recently made a big move across the country with my husband and baby bump from Calgary to Toronto, Canada. It's an exciting time: living, loving and designing in a big new city!

When did you decide you wanted to be a graphic designer?
It wasn't an immediate "a-ha!" moment, and I wasn't designing logos in my crib – but as I look back on it now, I've always been expressing myself creatively. From a young age, you could find me doodling kittens on scrap paper or creating books filled with made-up stories with crazy drawings of made-up people. As I got a bit older, I became obsessed with magazines and hoarded issues and issues of Sassy, Teen and Seventeen magazine which can now be found packed away in my parent's basement. However, even with all of that, I never thought I would be able to "make a living" as a creative (I thought it was just a hobby). As a result, I was on a very academic route in high school – confession: I was actually a "mathlete" (!!!). Even in college, I started going down the path of becoming a mathematician, but I was still taking fine arts as electives. Though I excelled in math and really loved formulas and algebra, my creative side was clearly calling. One thing lead to the other, and I ended up switching to the Graphic Design degree program. Honestly, I don't feel like graphic design is a HUGE leap from math – they are both about problem solving. Once I joined the program, I immediately fell in love with graphic design – with the idea that there are all of these visually exciting ways to solve a problem and clearly communicate an idea, message or feeling.

How did you transition from being a student in school to being a designer in the "real world"?
This wasn't easy. In my last year of college, I interned at a magazine and gained a lot of experience before I even had a chance to be out in the "real world". We weren't taught in school about the different types of paper, printing, ink, studio systems, proofing with clients, client relations, etc. but I had hands-on experience with all of that (plus, an amazing mentor) that taught me the ropes before I even had degree in hand. I was very lucky that way. But even with all of that, the transition from school to real-world/real-job was hard. Again, I was lucky to get a job RIGHT out of college (I think I graduated on a friday, started my new job on a monday), and the job was with a small boutique design studio that specialized in editorial design and art catalogues – and they won a lot of awards as a result of their talents. It was an amazing experience that taught me a lot, but was also the hardest thing I ever had to do. To be honest, I cried a lot in my first year out of school. The pressure of being one of two designers, was really heavy on this young naive grad. And being a small studio, we had our hands in everything, from the start of a job (meeting clients) to the middle (pitching ideas) to the end (production and hand off of files) – so a lot of pressure and I wasn't JUST flexing my design skills. Again, it was great experience that I wouldn't trade, but it was a lot to be thrown into right out of college and I wasn't living a glamorous life. It was hard work!

What was your first paid design job?
Good question?! I believe it was after my second year, during the summer, I worked for the church I attended in their Youth department as their ONLY graphic designer. I did a few big projects for them, but the biggest was redesigning their identity, and honestly at the time, I barely knew what an identity was! I had to go into meetings and pitch my ideas and concepts to groups of people (by myself) – incredibly intimidating for someone that had barely dipped her foot into design! I didn't know how to run a design meeting or how to pitch my ideas, I just sort of made it up as I went along. What I created was really well received, but looking back now, I can't believe I did that all on my own after just a few months of design school!

How have you been able to make a name for yourself in the design community?
I think loving what you do attracts like-minded people. I've had the opportunity to meet fellow creatives and that's been the biggest point of encouragement and growth for me. It's really important, when you work solo, to reach out and surround yourself with people that "get you". I've been really lucky to find that both online and in "real-life". It's amazing to be able to text a friend to ask for advice on pricing a new project, or email another friend to see what they would do in a similar client situation. I'm really thankful for those people that I can "talk shop" with, vent to and that give me real honest feedback.

What is one quality you think all designers should have?
There are so many qualities that are important to have in your skill set, but I think being a problem-solver is an key quality to have. Someone that can identify issues or see where something is lacking, not JUST pointing out the problem, but then they SEE the solution. I think this quality pushes you to not just rely on a specific style, or font or color palette, but pushes you to innovate your methods and become visionary in how you communicate!

What advice would you give to a new graphic designer?
Never stop learning. Never stop asking questions. I think sometimes when you've been working for a few years in the industry, you begin to either think "you know it all" or you are too embarrassed to ask. Just keep asking! I'd also encourage you to find a mentor, someone you can do just that: ask questions and soak up as much knowledge as possible.

Thanks so much Alyssa for contributing! You are such a talent and oh so lovely!

Hey hey there friends! Today on "Step it up" I'm talking about getting things done. Nike had it right with their "just do it" slogan. Sometimes, ya just gotta do it!

You know what I'm talking about. When thinking abou something you have to do makes you cringe inside, all you want to do is run to Facebook or Twitter. Good 'ol social media is a wonderful tool and a great distraction. Sometimes, you gotta pull out that old discipline stick and do the opposite. Tell yourself, "the sooner you get it done the sooner you won't have to think about it." There's nothing worse than having something you don't want to do lingering over your head all day. Here are a few ways I handle my "I just want to stalk people on Facebook" days.

1 // Have a to-do list and stick to it. I don't know about you guys, but in working for myself, to-do lists are life-savers. They act as my boss throughout the day. In the morning I arrange my tasks in order of priority. Once I finish one thing, I go to my list to see what's next for me to do. It saves me time and mental stress to know that my list knows what's up. It's constantly growing and changing throughout the day. If I get an email asking for logo revisions, I have to stop what I'm doing and put that new task onto my list. Right then and there. Or else I forget and that task never gets done! (Check out Tuex Duex it's what I use and I love it!)

2 // Set timers. Tell yourself that for the next hour (or whatever time period you desire) you won't wander away from the task at hand. Set a timer on your phone so you don't have to keep looking at the clock. Work hard on what you need to do for that time period, then take a 10 minute "wander" break. A wander break is where you give yourself 10 minutes to send out a tweet, check out the latest Travel Zoo deals, or update your Facebook status. (I just made that name up, and I think I like it!) Set a timer for this as well. After that 10 minutes is up, get back to the project you were working on before, or move onto something else. Giving yourself time constraints can do a ton of good for your day to day productivity. That way you are able to focus on the task at hand, knowing there's a "wander break" coming up!

3 // Suck it up (saying that in the nicest way possible!) There's always going to be that one thing you don't want to do. Take dishes for example. You just got done with a late dinner, you're exhausted from the day, and after an episode of Parks and Rec, your comfy bed is screaming your name. But there's one thing you forgot to do - dishes. Noooo! So you ignore those dishes and go straight to bed. Morning comes, you wake up to emails / children / work / more chores AND dishes from last night. Putting things off just makes for more work later. Ignoring things doesn't make them go away. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and do it, even when everything in you tells you not to.

These are things I've found help me get things done and "just do it" throughout my day. If you guys have any tips or have found something that helps you get things done throughout the day, leave it in the comments! We're all here to help each other out and I'm sure someone will benefit from it :)

Isn't it weird getting older? As a little girl, I always looked up to adults, thinking they had it all together. Now that I am one, I realize that life isn't perfect, and neither am I! I think however we measure success (we all see it differently) it seems like the end to our problems in our minds. As if when we get there, life will become the perfect reality we've always dreamed of. When really, we're still going to be the imperfect people we are today.

Just some words and thoughts on a Wednesday morn.

Have a great day friends!
Today we have the talented Jessica Cardelucci! Not only is this girl a well crafted designer but she is also an amazing photographer. I met her while working at a design firm in Newport Beach, and have always admired the knowledge she has on practical aspects of design, as well as her amazing work ethic. When I first went out on my own and started freelancing, Jessica was one of the first people by my side, always willing to give advice and help me out. I'm grateful she is here to share her wisdom with you all today!

As an artist I love using my photography and graphic design skills to convey a
message. I fell in love with corporate branding because of my passion for both
arts. Not only can I express a brand’s message through design, but also through
the use of imagery. Combining both talents into a single career has been a
dream come true. Recently, I even followed my dreams to sell photography prints, so keep an eye out for images available on my web site and in local coffee shops
soon!

When did you decide you wanted to be a graphic designer?
I decided to study Graphic Design at Chapman University in their BFA program
because of my love for photography and Photoshop. To be honest, I really
had no idea what I was signing up for... besides that I liked Photoshop! After
taking my first few courses, to my surprise I fell in love with Adobe Illustrator and
typography. My course on Advanced Typography was when I created my own
typeface “Sticky Fingers” inspired from the metal hinge on a pair of sun glasses.
This opened my eyes to a new career and lead me to where I am now.

How did you transition from being a student in school to being a designer in
the "real world"?
Since I freelanced on the side throughout college, I was pretty comfortable
dealing with my own clients. The hardest part was landing my first job and having
to be creative from 9 to 5! This was the most difficult, yet most important skill to
master. In the end of the day, though it is hard to force creativity I’m glad I have
that skill in my back pocket. Being a designer is worthless if you can’t meet a
deadline!

What was your first paid design job?
My first full time job was being hired as a graphic designer at David Riley
Associates, which was actually how I met Joanna! We worked on large branding
projects for local and nation wide companies. I oversaw most of the designs for
the rebrand of PdM Bakery | Cafe. This was an exciting project to work on where
I did everything from creating tag lines, developing patterns, to executing the
design & packaging.

How have you been able to make a name for yourself in the design community?
I love meeting other designers in the industry because it’s essential to share your problems and successes amongst each other. Working for myself, it is vital for
me to have friends I can depend on. It’s great to pick someone's brain when you
are struggling and need advice. I have always been the tech savvy one and the
problem solver. I can comfortably say I’m the ‘go to’ person when something
goes wrong! I truly enjoy helping other designers when time allows because to me, that’s what the design community is all about.

What is one quality you think all designers should have?
Thinking outside the box. It’s easy to see all of the amazing designs that other graphic designers create and it’s also just as easy to start following trends in the industry. I try to remind
myself to break outside the ‘norm’ and try something new. This is essential to
being a good designer.

What advice would you give to a new graphic designer?
Always treat every project like it’s your best. Many people make excuses why
their projects could be better like if it had a larger budget or if they had more time.
In the end of the day, it’s up to you as the designer to put 110% into every job
and make a $300 look like $3,000. Always doing your best will lead to bigger and
better things. I promise!

Thanks so much Jessica! Such great advice!
Red isn't normally my color. I'm not trying to rush Christmas on us or anything, I've just been liking it lately. It adds a pop of fall color to your wardrobe. I think my favorites are these chevron earrings. I'm all about comfort, so that pullover also looks amazing for a fall day.

Too bad it's supposed to be back in the 90s this week in So Cal. I'm trying not to think about it...
Whew! It's Friday! Hope you all have some fun plans this weekend! I'm headed out to Long Beach to spend some mother daughter time with mi madre. I'm looking forward to it, but at the same time trying to cram in a bunch of stuff I have to finish before heading out! Do you ever feel like leaving home for a bit can be more stressful than not?

Anyways, I hope it's a great one for you and that you enjoy this wonderful fall weather! (It rained here yesterday, and after weeks of it being over 100 degrees, I was ecstatic!)

Happy weekend friends! Make it a great one!

There's no substitute for hard work, they always say.

And it is so true! But do you ever feel like you're working extremely hard and not seeing any benefit or reward from it? You may be placing your efforts into the wrong place.

When I was a little girl, I remember learning how to put my seatbelt on by myself, and getting super frustrated with that thing. It would get stuck when I was trying to pull it, so I would pull harder, then it would get stuck once again! I would pull and yell, then it would somehow scratch my face and the whole thing would turn into one big mess. I remember one time in particular when this occurred and my dad patiently came over to help me out. I couldn't have been more than five years old, but I still remember the words he told me. "Joanna, work smarter, not harder." Simple statement most of you have probably heard before. But as a five year old child, this was the first time I had ever that said. And it blew my mind! I remember realizing that pulling the seatbelt harder wasn't going to do any good. I had to slow down, let it go, then slowly pull it over and around to the buckle. I've had seatbelt success ever since! ;)

My point in writing all of this is to remind you to put your hard work and efforts into places where they will be used to the best interest of you and others. When pulling doesn't work, just pulling harder doesn't do any better. If you are working really hard at something that just doesn't seem to be going anywhere, it may be time to re-examine some things. Now the question - ok, that's cool, but how do we do this? Well lucky for you (and me!) I've written down some tips on ways you can start working smarter, instead of burning yourself out and working oh so much harder.

1 // Examine your day. How do you spend the precious 24 hours you are given? Are you spending hours and hours on achieving the perfect text effect in Photoshop? There's definitely nothing wrong with that. But have you tried Googling shortcuts or tutorials on how you can achieve the same effect in half the time? I just discovered a shortcut in Illustrator (an Adobe program) the other day that will save me tons of time in the future. I was spending lots of time working to create this effect, not knowing there was a button I could press that does it for me! A perfect example of working smarter. Google is your bff.

2 // Slow down and think. Take a break. Even if it's just for 10 minutes, to think about your day. What do you need to get done, and how are you going to achieve that? Figuring this out was huge for me. I used to say to myself, "I can't take a break, there's too much to get done, I don't have 10 minutes to stop and plan!" But in all reality, those 10 minutes you take to do some planning and thinking will save you tons of time and help you get things done much faster! You may be slowing down for a minute, but in the long run, you're saving so much of your precious time!

3 // If something isn't working, change it up! Einstein said that doing the same thing over and over expecting different results is insanity. Not saying anyone reading this is insane, but if what you're doing each day isn't getting you the results you need, it's time for change! Change isn't easy, especially when you've set yourself into a pattern. But change is vital for growth. Do you have a business but are having a hard time getting the kind of clients you want? Maybe you need to start attending events where your ideal clients are hanging out and get to know them. Reach out to your favorite blogger whose audience is similar to the clients you want, and see if they will feature your work! Do you have a ton of traffic coming in to your site but no one is buying what you're selling? Maybe you need to re-examine your product and how your site is set up. (Good design is key!) Examine what isn't working, and think about how you can change that. Also examine what is working, and how you can make it work better! Change is good my friends, and you won't be able to grow in whatever you are doing without it.

4 // Learn from the mistakes around you. There are tons of people who have ventured out and done similar things to what you are doing now. Take a look at them. Did they succeed? How did they do that? Did they fail? What mistakes did they make that you can avoid? Mistakes are made everyday and if examined, you can figure out how to not waste your time making the same ones. There's no need to re-invent the wheel and start from scratch with something that has already been figured out. Learn from mistakes. Yours and others. It will save you time and stress in the future!

5 // Take advantage of technology. There are so many softwares and apps that are created to help you do things better. Everything from keeping a calendar, to bulk editing those weddings you shoot every weekend. Don't slave over things that can be done quicker. Use your resources, and if you don't know how to find them, ask around. (Hello Google!) Follow tech blogs. There's so much out there to help you save time and do what you do better. Take advantage!

These are things I'm currently learning as I continue on my journey as a small business owner. As I write these things I'm really talking to myself! I hope this can help you in some way in your journey, whatever that may be!

Happy Thursday friends! The weekend is almost here! AH! So much to do!
I thought it would be nice to have some motivating words to keep you going in the middle of the week.
This quote is so true, and reminds me that there are no substitutes for smart work habits.
Well said John Ruskin, well said.
I'm calling it "Design Journey." I'll be talking with some fabulous designers about when they entered into the design world, how they got to where they are today and any advice they have to give. We're starting off the series today with the ultra-talented designer and a friend of mine, Eva Black. Enjoy!

Hello! I'm Eva Black. I'm a graphic designer and studio owner of Eva Black Design. I work and live in Los Angeles with my husband. Most of my work consists of brand identity, web design and paper goods. The style of my work usually includes, texture and graphic elements with a big emphasis on type and color. I also have a love for working with my hands which shows up in my work with the use of various hand made elements and pieces.

When did you decide you wanted to be a graphic designer?
Back in High School, I took the one and only 'computer graphics' class that was offered and loved it, I knew right then that it was what I wanted to do 'when I grew up.' But I don't think we even used Photoshop, I think it was Corel Painter. It wasn't until college where I really got into real design and haven't looked back since.

How did you transition from being a student in school to being a designer in the "real world"?
I think for me, it was kind of smooth transition because it was gradual. The last semester at school I was a part-time student, working part-time at my school's marketing department, doing freelance another part-time and working on my final senior project. So when graduation came, I had already been freelancing and had built up my portfolio and client list and was ready to move forward with more on my own work.

What was your first paid design job?
My first actual paid design job was at my school's marketing department. It was an internship, but thankfully paid! I actually learned a lot from that job, specifically how to work with vendors, because that wasn't something they really 'taught' in school and it's more something you learn as you do. My first freelance paid job ( however pretty cheap ) came shortly after, where I made a logo for a friend.

How have you been able to make a name for yourself in the design community?
By making connections and working hard. The best part of making connections in the design community, is that you have a community. I've met some really great people ( like Joanna! ) by building relationships that are built on being designers. Working really hard is also really important. Being a designer isn't always easy but when you work hard you're able to see your progress.

What is one quality you think all designers should have?
Staying focused. Focus on your design first and foremost. It's the most important part of being a designer. I think our work should be continually progressing and we should stay focused on becoming better designers.

What advice would you give to a new graphic designer?
Work hard and make those connections! You might be an amazing designer but no one will see it if no one knows about you. Whether that be trying to get a job at a design firm or do freelance work, let people know about you! Most people will come to you because not only do you have great work but because people will know you personally or they've heard of you through word of mouth.

Thanks so much Eva! You are an inspiration!!
I am beyond thrilled that it's supposed to be steadily in the 70s this week. The coolest weather we've had in far too long! I'm finally ready to bring in fall.

For me, fall means cozy with a warm beverage by your side. These are some fun items I found that I think would be perfect for bringing in fall.

What does fall mean for you? Pumpkin spice lattes and a chick flick? Carving pumpkins and baking the seeds? Whatever it is, I hope it brings you happiness this season :)

Happy Monday friends!

Have you guys ever stopped to think about what you're doing in the world and why? I think we all hit a wall, get burnt out, tired, stressed, and think to ourselves, "what the heck am I doing with my life, and is it worth it?"

I overheard a friend at DesignLife last weekend saying that at the end of your life, are you really going to be lying on your death bed thinking, "Man, I really wish I had more Twitter followers..."

SO true, right? That's not what you're going to be saying. You will be wishing you had spent more time with the ones you love, investing in relationships, going on adventures, stretching yourself, using the gifts you were given and encouraging those around you to be the best they can be. Yet we don't do this. We get caught up with the every day stress of life and forget that our life one day will end.

I think it's these times in life where we have to look at the world around us, and remember that there is a beautiful, miraculous universe functioning day to day, and it has nothing to do with us. The world we interact with daily is sooo small, and there are greater things happening that have nothing to do with you and I. We are apart of something bigger. Something extravagant and beautiful. If you mess up, if you fail miserably, the world keeps spinning.

Take time to think about the blue whales who weigh 150 tons, yet are gracefully moving through the ocean at this very moment. RIGHT NOW that is happening. There are wolves hunting their pray out in the forests, stars exploding at this very minute, and we won't know about it for thousands of years! There is so much we will never comprehend... I find freedom in that. It refreshes me to remember that the world doesn't rest on my shoulders.

Life is more than blogs, businesses, Twitter and Instagram. Step out of this facade of a world we live in and think about what really matters. This life goes by far too fast to forget those things. Don't let it pass you by.

Sip your coffee a bit slower, smell it and savor it.

Ok, enough refection and big-picture talk! Go and enjoy your day!!

Happy Thursday friends!
Thanks so much for all of your support on my post yesterday. I got a few emails from you guys telling me that it helped inspire you after being in a rut. It makes me happy to know that you were encouraged and motivated! I've experienced many ruts, so I know how it feels.

I'm working on a few new things for this blog, and I'm really excited about them. Just want to tell every one of you that I'm so thankful for each of you who come and read what I have to say. I'm always surprised when I get an email, tweet or some sort of internet response from one of you. It's so cool how we can chat and get to know each other without actually meeting face to face. And who knows? Maybe we will someday!

So thanks again for being here! Just wanted to tell you I appreciate it!

Happy Wednesday friends!!Joanna Waterfallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10536161015876494852noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3492146538065873069.post-81700337884634095492012-10-02T07:32:00.001-07:002012-10-02T09:54:08.676-07:00What does it take??

As I wrote to you all yesterday, I had an amazingly inspiring time in Palm Springs this past weekend.
Being surrounded by such talented and driven women (and feeling SO blessed to be hanging with them) really convicted me to push myself to the next level. To step it up with my design work, my client interactions, with my personal brand, and my blog content.

If you've been reading my blog at all this past year, you know I love to blog inspiration, thoughts and my graphics work from time to time. Now I'm thinking it's time to be more focused. Not that I won't blog any of those things anymore, I started blogging to journal my thoughts and that won't change. I will continue to show my work and inspirations. But I'm ready to step it up.

Now I'm wondering to myself, what does it take? I'm sure you have felt the need to step things up in some regards. It may be with your job, your relationships, or business. We all feel it, as we should!

But how does one go about doing that? Just because I WANT to step it up doesn't mean I know HOW!

So, I'm taking the big picture things I've seen from successful people and compiling them into 5 basic points. These are general statements, each I could talk about for a long time, but since we're in the day and age of quick info, I'm going to be separating these into separate blog posts.

Here's the first one! Get ready to step it up with me, friends. We're in this together.

1 // Get organized.
I'm not just talking about getting organized with your receipts and paperwork... (though that is a good thing!) I'm talking about getting organized with your thoughts, goals and vision. Don't just have them jumbled up in your head, changing day to day and week to week. Write them down and stick to them! Your long term goals, short term and present day. Keep them short and to the point. Having organized goals will allow you to live them out.

2 // Focus.
What is it you want? If you don't know where you're headed you will never get there. When learning how to draw I learned that when you create a line you need to know where it ends, or your drawing will be off. It is the same with life. If you don't know where you are headed and what you want you won't make it there. It's ok (and good!) to be flexible. It's ok to take opportunity as it comes. But having an end goal can really give you motivation and drive. When you know the purpose behind what you're doing it will help you get there.

3 // Hard Work.
Don't you despise the people who always look effortlessly amazing? Let me tell you a secret... it's not effortless. It takes hard work and discipline. Do you think celebrities are born looking like that? No, they work hard for what they have. All good things come with some sort of hard work.

Working hard means going against what you feel. Feelings will lead you astray. Just because you feel like sleeping in, doesn't mean you should. You must go against what your body is telling you and get out of that bed. It's the same with anything. As much as you love what you do, you're not always going to feel like doing it. You must learn to be disciplined and work hard. Want to step it up? Ya gotta work it!

4 // Reach Out!
I think so many of us try and do really difficult things all on our own. I know I do! But there are 7.043 billion other people in the world with talents and disciplines different than yours. Reach out to them and ask for help! You'd be surprised at who will lend you their advice and expertise. And if not, you're in the exact same place as you started - no harm done :) If you really want to run your own business but aren't sure how to run your finances, ask other small business owners how they do things. Let down your pride. It's the best way to learn!

5 // Confidence.
Here's where I struggle. I'm a HUGE people pleaser and do what I can to keep people from feeling any sort of uneasiness. But one thing I've learned is you must trust yourself. If you take the time to dig within you, you will find that you already know the truth, you know what you should be doing and the answers to your questions. The only thing that stops us from living that out is our fear. We must have the confidence to do what's right, despite what others think. This is honestly one of the hardest things for me to do. It's what holds me back the most. I have a fear of succeeding and what it will do to me. What other people will think, who will criticize me. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm always going to have fear, I just have to continue to act even with that lingering feeling. Stepping it up can't happen without confidence. Something I'm learning everyday!!

I hope these inspire you on how you can step it up in whatever it is you're doing. Since I'm planning on doing more focused blog posts with better content, I've decided I won't be posting every single day. If you follow me on Twitter or like my Facebook page, you'll be able to see when I post a blog. Find me over there! Let's chat it up!

Happy Tuesday friends! Hope it's a good one!

Lead by Promise Tangeman and Alyssa Yuhas, 20 talented freelance graphic designers (all women!) packed up their stuff and headed out to Palm Springs- and I got to be apart of it! (whaaat??) Yeah, I couldn't believe it either.

The point was to get to know everyone and learn from each other in a relaxed environment. We hung out by the pool, shopped around, ate great food, and heard from a few of the attendees on different subjects freelancers deal with. We were able to ask questions, gather knowledge and empathize with one another. When you work from home on by yourself, it feels great to talk to others who are doing the same (and killing it!). I was honored to be apart of it.

To say that I was nervos about this trip would be an understatement. I had followed and been inspired by so many of the ladies who were going for years. I was intimidated at the thought of hanging out with them all weekend. I'm not at the level of so many of these women, but surrounding yourself with people who are better than you will only help you, right? I knew this, but it didn't mean I was free of fear at the thought!

After I arrived and got to know everyone a bit, I realized that despite the fact these women are all amazingly talented and have experienced success, they are some of the sweetest people who genuinely want to help where they can.

I met so many of the women I had talked to online for the past year, which was amazing! I know it sounds really weird, but none of us would have met if it wasn't for the internet. Meeting my Twitter / blog friends in real life was a bit strange, and no one is exactly how you think they will be. But in most cases, they are wonderful and you already have a connection from reading each other's blogs, tweeting and seeing photos of one another.

Have you ever stepped out of your comfort zone and done something scary, but were thankful you did afterwards? I think that's what happens with most of us. When we step out despite our fear, we can come out of it with a stronger sense about us. We are capable of so much, yet we allow fear to control us. "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear." ~Ambrose Redmoon

I learned so much this weekend and am incredibly inspired by the women I was with. I don't know how I got this opportunity, but I did. I am blessed and so thankful.

Cheers to a new week!

Step out of your comfort zone and take action, despite the fear inside. So worth it!

Friday's are the day when the gardeners come to our house. As I write I'm listening to their grass trimmer (or whatever those things are) and awkwardly trying not to make eye contact with the gardener in the window next to me. They're really loud and it's hard for Nolan and I to hear each other when we talk. I'm excited for them to be done.

So in the mornings, oftentimes I browse Twitter, see some articles posted that I would like to read, and open them up in a new window, saving them to read later when I have more time.

Here are some of them I've collected throughout the week for small business owners and creatives.
I thought they may be helpful to you as well! You can read them this weekend over a nice cup of coffee. Mmmm.... that sounds yummy...
I was dating a guy at the time who was really into graphic design, and although I always wanted to try it, it was kind of claimed as his thing. So I focused on photography.

Flash forward five years. I have now discovered my love for graphic design, and have set on pursuing that as a career. But it doesn't mean I don't still dabble in photography. It's still something I really enjoy doing.

I've recently had a few people ask me to photograph their engagement pics. I was hesitant at first, as it's been awhile since I've brused up on my photography skills. But after a few times of playing around with my cam, I thought it was something I could do. So I said yes!

Here are a few previews from the recent shoots. I realized when you have adorable couples to shoot, it makes photographing them that much easier. Both of these couples have really amazing stories, and are some wonderful people to spend a few hours with talking, laughing and taking photos of.

I'll also be photographing both of their weddings coming up soon! I'm excited, as last summer I photographed a few weddings, and had a great time.

Can't wait, and congrats on your engagements Kelli and Jordan, AND Janelle and Eric!!
I started one, thought of something better, started new, then my husband came home from work and it was over. There would be no blogging that day. Oh well. It's not the first time.

Warning: my thoughts are a bit all over the place this morning. But I wanted to just let you in on a few things happening in my life and my brain these days. Here we go...

One: I am so happy that it's not 100 degrees this week. It's still in the 90's, but I can handle that. I even baked yesterday. It was probably 90, and I thought to myself, I can smell fall. And it was a really good feeling. 90 degrees, I'll take you any day over 100.

Two: I posted a photo a few days ago on Instagram of the beverage containers that had collected on my desk. After I posted it I thought, "why did I do that? That's not cute, it's kind of gross." Then, to make myself feel better, I thought, "I'm just being real, right?" But how real do we get on social media? I mean, seeing someone's gross empty coffee cups on their desk may not be visually what we're going for here... Still wondering if I should have done that... :)

Three: I joined my first Twitter chat yesterday. Have you guys ever done one of those? I was super intimidated. It kind of felt like we were all in a room yelling out these bits of information hoping that someone heard what we were saying. Despite my scared and timid attitude going into it, it took me out of my comfort zone and I think I benefitted from it in the end. I met some cool new Twitter friends too.

Four: This month has FLOWN by. To think next month is October is cray cray. October? Then Thanksgiving... then Christmas! Holy moly. Hello 2013. Life truly does go by faster and faster as you age. Thinking about my new years resolutions right about now...

Five: I'm trying to eat healthy again. I think part of my posting all of my empty caffeinated beverages on Instagram made me re-examine my health habits. It's going well so far. Except for the baking thing yesterday... Everything in moderation, right??

Six: Wednesdays are now my husband and I's new date nights. Every night of the week now we each have some sort of obligation, except for Wednesdays. So we decided that was our night to hang. I'm planning on making a yummy dinner for us and renting a good Red Box. Last time we watched "The Iron Lady" with Meryl Streep. SUCH a good movie. I cried. A lot. So today I'll be sporadically browsing food blogs for ideas on what I should make tonight, and if anyone has any good movie suggestions, I'm happy to hear them :)

Ok, I think that's it. Thanks for letting me babble here for a bit. If you made it this far in the post, I appreciate you. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, embrace the simple things and don't stress :) Yay!Joanna Waterfallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10536161015876494852noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3492146538065873069.post-1205254181732146462012-09-17T18:18:00.002-07:002012-09-17T18:18:40.702-07:00Donna & Nailah

Happy Monday everyone! Today was a busy Monday for me, so I'm just now finding the time to blog.

So I really want to start focusing on showing you guys more of what I'm working on here on the blogy. Especially because I just have a temp site up for my portfolio at the moment! (slowly making progress on that one)

So I wanted to share with you a sneak peek of a brand I'm currently working on with the fabulous Donna & Nailah. They each currently have their own businesses, but are teaming up to create something new and awesome. I had the privilege of attending my first YFE event last week, where Donna & Nailah spoke on the "not so sparkly truths of entrepreneurship." It was great to hear that we are not alone in our struggles!

They make quite the dynamic duo, and are so fun to work with. Can't wait to show you guys what we have in store!

Happy weekend everyone! I found this photo on and just fell in love with the spirit of it. I want to be her!

So I hope you all have fun plans this weekend. If no fun plans, I hope you have some good relaxation time :) I'm headed to Magic Mountain tonight and kinda nervous... I haven't been on a big roller coaster probably since my freshman year of college... hoping I can still handle those things!

This week I've realized I have a ton of my own stuff I need to catch up on... I'm STILL working on a new website... gosh that thing is taking me forever... For now I hope you guys can still follow me and see what I'm working on here on the good 'ol bloggy. I have some fun posts to plan for you guys, and am working on vamping up my personal brand. So stick with me here as I grow and develop into something (hopefully) more awesome!

Happy weekend friends! Hope it's a great one!

PS - If you're living in a place where it's under 90 degrees this weekend - enjoy a pumpkin spice latte for me, will ya? I'll be sweating over here longing for fall to come...
